The harvest festival, in both its Karnataka and Tamil voices.
Ellu-bella, a pongal pot boiling over and kites on the terrace — the harvest festival run so Kannadiga and Tamil colleagues celebrate the same morning together.

What makes a Sankranti & Pongal land at work?
Makar Sankranti is the one Indian festival fixed to the sun rather than the moon: mid-January, when it turns north into Makara and the harvest is in. In Karnataka that means ellu-bella — sesame, jaggery, coconut and groundnut exchanged with "ellu bella thindu olle maathadi" — sugarcane, decorated cattle and kites over the terrace. Your Tamil colleagues are keeping the same day as Thai Pongal: the pot set to boil over as the sun rises, a fresh kolam at the door, Mattu Pongal for the cattle the day after. One sun, two languages of celebration — we run them as a single morning so nobody has to pick.
